Posted by Derrick Harper on February 9, 2021 in

As we move further into the 2021 racing season, the Road to the Kentucky Derby is in full swing. That also means betting predictions for the Triple Crown are underway. The Triple Crown series will kick off with the Kentucky Derby on May 1, followed by the Preakness Stakes on May 15, and the Belmont Stakes will close out the series on June 5.

The early nomination phase for the Triple Crown closed on Jan. 23, so we can begin to look at the top betting names on the list of 326, 3-year-old Thoroughbreds. That said, let’s jump right into action so you can start planning your bets and place them against their Triple Crown odds.

Horse Racing Triple Crown Betting Predictions

Here is a look at the top betting names for the 2021 Triple Crown:

Essential Quality Tops List

The 2-year-old male champion Essential Quality is the leading name right now for Triple Crown betting predictions. The two-time Grade 1 winner will make his 3-year-old debut in the Grade 3, $750,000 Southwest Stakes on Feb. 15 at Oaklawn Park.

Trained by Brad Cox, he is one of the trainer’s 14 horses nominated to the Triple Crown.

Essential Quality has a perfect 3-for-3 record with career earnings of $1,335,144. Regular jockey Luis Saez had the call as the runner won the Nov. 6 TVG Breeders’ Cup Juvenile presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (G1) at Keeneland. He has demonstrated solid speed figures, registering a 101 in that race.

His other big performance was a victory in the Oct. 3 Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity (G1) also at Keeneland, where he was joined by Saez as well.

Caddo River and Keepmeinmind

Another one of the top betting names going into the Triple Crown is rising star Caddo River. The Hard Spun colt is also trained by Brad Cox and owned by Shortleaf Stable.

He is quickly becoming a top name for this year’s Kentucky Derby, especially after his dominant victory in the Jan. 22 Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Park. In that outing, he crushed his rivals by 10 1/4 lengths.

The runner is now preparing for his next start in the $1 million Rebel Stakes (G2) on March 13 at Oaklawn Park. On Feb. 5, Caddo River put in an easy half-mile work in :50.60 as he prepared for the big race.

The Robertino Diodoro-trained Keepmeinmind is also a top betting choice for the Triple Crown. Owned by Cypress Creek Equine, Arnold Bennewith, and Spendthrift Farm, the Laoban colt is right under Essential Quality in the Road to the Derby standings.

He has one win, two seconds, and one third from four career outings, and his purse earnings sit at $394,320.

His most recent race was a Nov. 28 victory in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs, and the runner is preparing for the Southwest Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn.

On Feb. 2, the runner put in major preparations with a 5-furlong workout going :59, the fastest of 17 going that distance.

Some of the other top Triple Crown betting names include Brooklyn Strong, Capo Kane, Fire At Will, Get Her Number, Greatest Honour, Keepmeinmind, Midnight Bourbon, Life Is Good, and Jackie’s Warrior.
