Horse Racing Betting: 2021 Belmont Stakes Odds Update

Posted by Derrick Harper on June 4, 2021 in

Only a few days separate us from the horse racing Triple Crown’s last leg, making this a perfect time to start putting down our bets. Correctly handicapping Saturday’s race will not be easy since not one horse in the field has started in all three Triple Crown races, but the reduced field makes it easier to spot who has a better chance to walk away with the lion’s share of $1.5 purse.

Here are the latest Belmont Stakes Betting Odds and horses to look out for for the 2021 Belmont Stakes.

Essential Quality and Rombauer Top Favourites

Kentucky Derby favorite, Essential Quality, ended up in fourth, losing by only a length, and will now seek redemption at Belmont Park. Brad H. Cox’s horse traveled to New York well-rested and should be seen as a heavy favorite.

Essential Quality ran well at Kentucky but was unable to overrun Medina Spirit, Hot Rod Charlie, and Mandaloun in the final stretch. With a much smaller field, his chances to shine should be greater since this is a horse that ticks all the boxes for a strong contender.

Joining Essential Quality as the second favorite to win the Belmont Stakes is Rombauer. He looked good in the Preakness, where he secured a definitive victory by outrunning Medina Spirit and Midnight Bourbon in the stretch.

However, it’s important to consider that Rombauer got beaten by Essential Quality in the Blue Grass. That might explain the slightly higher betting odds.

Another thing worth mentioning is that Rombauer posted a career-best 102 Beyer Speed Figure at Pimlico – his best before was 88. Will he be as fast on Sunday?

Hot Rod Charlie, Rock Your World, and Known Agenda Looking to Cause an Upset

Hot Rod Charlie, Rock Your World, and Known Agenda are priced as second-favorites to win in Belmont. Hot Rod Charlie is at +500, while Rock Your World and Known Agenda are priced at +600.

Hot Rod Charlie landed ahead of Essential Quality in the Derby to finish third, making him a serious contender once again. He will also reunite with his jockey Flavien Pratt, who was aboard Rombauer in the Preakness Victory.

Rock Your World finished 17th in the Derby due to a poor start but ran well at the Santa Anita Derby. He is one of the four horses with a triple-digit career-best Beyer (100), so definitely a fast horse, but it remains to be seen whether he’s consistent enough to steal the win.

Known Agenda won the Florida Derby and should be respected for this race. Looking back, horses who ran well at the Florida Derby also impressed in Belmont. That includes Tiz The Law, who ran second in 2020 after posting 1:50 in Florida – Known Agenda posted 1:49.45.

Bourbonic, Overtook, and France Go de Ina Will Need a Miracle

Bourbonic, Overtook and France Go de Ina are your outsiders for the Belmont Stakes and a trio of horses almost no one expects to succeed. And it’s not like those are slow horses. It’s just that the other five are that much better.

Bourbonic finished 13th in the Derby, but he has no excuse for that placement, unlike Rock Your World. Overtook has only one career victory and not a single in stakes races.

France Go de Ina enters Belmont Stakes as the biggest underdog in the field, and that’s completely fine. The Japan-based colt has had a flash of greatness in Preakness before finishing in seventh.

Although there is a world where either of the three shock the world, we don’t believe that will happen. All three have been struggling and have not shown anything that leads us to believe that they can improve.
