2016 Belmont Stakes Odds Preview

Save for the legendary American Pharoah last year, recent horse betting favorites have not performed that well in the Belmont Stakes. That, however, isn’t dissuading 2016 Belmont Stakes betting enthusiasts from backing Exaggerator—runner-up in the 2016 Kentucky Derby and winner of the 2016 Preakness Stakes—to record another win in the final leg of racing’s Triple Crown on June 11th at Belmont Park in New York.

Besides his strong ability as a closer, Exaggerator will get a big shot in the arm as arguably his biggest competitor Nyquist—winner of the Derby and an impressive third-place finisher in Preakness—has withdrawn from the Belmont field due to high blood count. Having beaten Exaggerator in all but one of their five career meetings, Nyquist’s withdrawal is definitely welcomed news for Exaggerator’s supporters.

Suddenbreakingnews, who finished fifth in the Derby before resting in the Preakness, is the next favorite in the online 2016 Belmont Stakes odds. His stamina and ability to pick up the pace in the final stages of the race, along with his extra rest, makes him must-watch on Saturday.

For all Suddenbreakingnews’ stamina that fits the long-distance Belmont track, it is interesting that Cherry Wine is considered by many as Exaggerator’s biggest sleeper threat. Aided by his strong pace and equally strong stamina, Cherry Wine performed splendidly at the Preakness, grabbing second-place money. If he can tune into these strengths once again, the longer track at Belmont should be favorable to him.

Still on sleepers, we have the duo of Destin and Stradivari making a lot of noise in the Belmont Stakes betting boards. These two colts come with the reputation of being conditioned by America’s top trainer, Todd Pletcher. The seven-time Eclipse Award winning conditioner is the best in the business when it comes to Triple Crown races, especially the Belmont that he has littered with several top-performing horses over the past 15 years. With both Destin and Stradivari boasting of stellar speed, the rather pace-less Belmont offers the 48-year-old trainer a chance to add another feather to his already-excellent record in the American classic.

Rounding up our list of most-noteworthy horses at the Belmont is Arkansas Derby-winner Creator. His 13th-place finish in the Kentucky Derby raises valid questions about his ability to run well this Saturday. Nonetheless, Creator has previously proven that he has the speed and experience outrun his competitors, and added to his extra rest from skipping the Preakness; he should be able to put a valiant podium-worthy performance at Belmont Park.
