Ward vs Kovalev 2 Final Betting Preview & Boxing Odds

Posted by Ted Merrick on June 16, 2017 in

The sweet science takes center stage once again on Saturday night, as Sergey Kovalev (30-1-1, 26 KO) seeks redemption in his rematch against Andre Ward (31-0, 15 KO), with a light-heavyweight title on the line. These two met back in November, as Ward suffered an early knockdown but then roared back to take the win in a unanimous decision, with all three cards showing a 114-113 decision. Now Ward holds the WBO, WBA and IBF world light-heavyweight titles…but Kovalev wants them back. But the boxing odds don’t seem to favor Kovalev for this rematch.

Why should you bet on Ward?

Ward brought home the gold in the 2004 Olympics in the light-heavyweight division, although he had moved to the super middleweight classification until 2015, winning 28 bouts at that level. Of the two fighters, he is better at counter-punching and shows a lot of brains and technical skill in the ring.

In addition to those three titles that he wants to defend, he also has to want more redemption after the awful 2015 he went through, dealing with a contract dispute and multiple injuries. When he came back into the ring, he picked up a stoppage win against Paul Smith. Ring magazine has Ward as their top boxer, pound for pound.

Ward heads into the rematch as the favorite in the boxing odds.

Why should you put your money on Kovalev?

While Ward is the savvier of the two fighters, Kovalev is the stronger. He opened the first fight between these two with an early knockdown, and if he can score another one of those in the early rounds, he should come out with a higher level of pressure than he showed last time, motivated to pick up an early win and keep the judges out of the decision. So if Ward cannot escape Kovalev’s big blows this time, Kovalev should get his belts back.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

This is going to be a terrific fight to watch either way. However, I see Ward brimming with even more confidence after last summer’s win, and I see him winning this on the cards.
